New Kent BOS votes down turning former summer camp into drug rehab center

NEW KENT, Va. (WWBT) – The New Kent County Board of Supervisors voted 4-1 Monday night to not enable a faith-based drug rehab center to relocation into a former summer camp in the county.

Monday night’s conference was filled with county homeowners in favor of the center coming to the county and others who desired to reveal their issues.

The new center would have been run by the company, Faith Recovery, which was looking to leave its present area in downtown Newport News and, with a conditional use authorization, relocation into the former Makemie Wood Summer Camp.

The camp would have been a new house to up to 40 people who might have been looking to seek help with addiction.

” The focus of how desperate we require these centers more and more each day can not be revealed enough, they conserve lives, they conserved my life,” a county homeowner stated throughout the general public commenting duration.

While there were some homeowners who revealed the requirement for the center, a number of people were dressed in orange Monday night and asked the group to started a business elsewhere.

” I’m here to formally present the board with petitions signed by New Kent residents and taxpayers who are asking you to reject this conditional use authorization,” a county homeowner in opposition of the center stated.

Faith Recovery Director, Travis Hall, was at the conference to describe to the community why the program was looking to move its center from Hampton Roadways.

He stated he felt New Kent County would provide a much better house for those recuperating who otherwise might be lured to relapse in downtown Newport News.

Hall likewise talked about how the program picks prospects who desire help thoroughly, however it was insufficient to sway the board.

” We ask you not to bring these 40 trainees, addicts, alcoholics felons, plus a host of others into our community,” a county homeowner stated. “They do not belong here.”

The managers all voted to reject the authorization other than for District 5 manager, John Lockwood who thinks a program like this is required now especially in New Kent.

” I drove previous 2 houses that I personally reported to the constable’s workplace, that were dealing with drug concerns on my method to Makemie Woods from my home,” Lockwood stated. “So it’s not like it does not exist it’s not like it does not exist all over in our community”

Hall states while he’s dissatisfied in the board’s choice, his company will continue to appearance for the next right fit.
