The area is one of the most violent in Mexico due to grass wars in between competing gangs consisting of the effective Jalisco New Generation Cartel, whose leader, Nemesio “El Mencho” Oseguera, is one of the United States’ most-wanted fugitives, with a $10 million bounty on his head.

Drug gangs in Mexico have actually assaulted rehab centers in the past, normally to eliminate drug users or dealerships allied with competing gangs.

In July 2020, greatly armed males stormed a drug rehab center in the main city of Irapuato and eliminated 27 people.

Mexico has actually long had issues with rehab centers since many are independently run, underfunded and typically dedicate abuses versus recuperating addicts. The federal government invests reasonably little cash on rehab, typically making the unregistered centers the only alternative offered for bad households.

In addition, addicts and dealerships who deal with attacks from competitors on the streets in some cases take haven at the rehab centers, making the centers themselves targets for attack.
